Sign Pricing Guide

Affordable Custom Signs in Ottawa — Honest Pricing Guidance

What drives custom sign costs, realistic price ranges by sign type, and how to get the best value from your sign budget — without compromising on the things that matter in Ottawa's climate.

"Affordable" is a relative term in signage. A $500 sign that needs to be replaced in three years is more expensive than a $2,000 sign that lasts fifteen. This guide focuses on value — understanding what you are paying for, where there is legitimate flexibility, and where cutting cost creates problems. What Drives Custom Sign Costs in Ottawa

Five factors account for most of the variation in custom sign pricing. Understanding them lets you make informed decisions about where to invest and where there is genuine flexibility.

Sign Type

Illuminated signs — channel letters, LED cabinets — cost significantly more than non-illuminated signs of the same size. Illumination adds LED modules, power supplies, conduit, and electrical connection to the scope. If the location has adequate ambient light or the sign is interior-facing, a non-illuminated sign can reduce cost substantially.

Size

Sign cost scales with area. More material, more production time, more installation labour. The practical way to reduce cost is to reduce size — but size should be driven by visibility requirements, not budget alone. An undersized sign that can't be read from the street is not a good investment at any price.

Material Grade

Commercial-grade aluminum, UV-stable powder coat, cast vinyl, and commercial LED modules cost more than consumer equivalents. For permanent exterior signs in Ottawa's climate, commercial-grade materials are the appropriate specification. For short-term or temporary signs, consumer-grade materials are reasonable — and priced accordingly.

Installation Complexity

Ground-floor storefront installation is the baseline. Second-storey installation requires a lift. Signs requiring new electrical from the panel add electrician scope. Signs in municipalities with strict permit requirements add permit drawings and application fees. We quote installation complexity as a discrete line item so you know what you are paying for.

Permit Requirements

Most permanent exterior signs in Ottawa require a sign permit. Permit drawings, application fees, and the time from submission to approval are project costs. Permit requirements vary by zone and sign type — we flag permit requirements during the quoting stage so they are never a surprise.

How to Get the Best Value from Your Sign Budget

Where to find genuine savings — without trading away the things that determine whether a sign performs in Ottawa's conditions.

  • Reduce size before reducing material grade — a smaller commercial-grade sign outperforms a larger consumer-grade sign in Ottawa's climate.

  • Choose non-illuminated where the location allows — the cost savings are significant and a well-designed non-illuminated sign reads clearly in daylight.

  • Phase the project — window graphics and a temporary banner first, permanent exterior sign after the business is open and generating revenue.

  • Get a permit-ready design from the start — retrofitting a sign design to meet bylaw requirements after rejection wastes time and money.

  • Ask for a 10-year cost of ownership comparison — a commercial-grade sign installed once versus a cheaper sign replaced twice often tells a different story.
