What AODA Requires for Signage
The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act sets out specific design and installation requirements for accessible signage in Ontario workplaces and public spaces.
Tactile Signs with Raised Characters
Room identification signs must have raised (embossed) characters and Grade 2 Braille. Signs must be located on the latch side of the door, centered at 1,525 mm from the finished floor.
High-Contrast Finish
A minimum 70% luminance contrast between characters and background is required. Light characters on a dark background (or dark on light) must be used. Gloss finishes are prohibited — matte or satin only.
Character Height and Spacing
Minimum character heights are based on viewing distance. For room identification signs, minimum raised character height is 16 mm. Proportional letter spacing must be maintained.
Wayfinding and Directory Signs
Wayfinding systems must use consistent pictograms and visual contrast that meets the IASR. Directories must include text in high-contrast format with a logical sequence.
Illumination
Signage in areas that may have reduced ambient light must be illuminated or use retroreflective materials. Backlit sign faces must not reduce the effective contrast ratio.
Who Must Comply
Private-sector and not-for-profit organizations with 50 or more employees in Ontario. Public-sector organizations (government, hospitals, universities) have stricter timelines and broader scope.
Compliance note: The signage requirements apply under Section 30 of the Design of Public Spaces Standard and Section 80.34 of the Customer Service Standard. Requirements vary based on organization size and sector. Consult an accessibility specialist for a full compliance review specific to your facility.
