Outdoor Sign Materials — What Each One Is Good For
Seven materials cover the vast majority of commercial outdoor signage applications. Here is an honest assessment of each one.
Aluminum
The dominant outdoor sign material for commercial applications. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and workable into virtually any sign form — channel letters, cabinet signs, post and panel, flat-cut letters. Available in multiple gauges for different structural requirements. Finish with polyurethane paint or powder coat for UV and weather resistance.
Steel
Used where structural strength is required — sign pylons, monument sign frames, and large cabinet structures. Heavier than aluminum. Requires galvanizing or powder coating to prevent corrosion in Ottawa's wet conditions, including road salt exposure near grade.
Stainless Steel
Premium exterior material for dimensional lettering and architectural sign elements. Inherently corrosion-resistant without additional coating. Available in brushed, mirror-polished, or powder-coated finishes. Used for prestige exterior identification signs, building addresses, and lobby feature elements.
Acrylic
Widely used for sign faces on illuminated cabinets, backlit panels, and interior dimensional signs. Available in clear, frosted, coloured, and metallic sheets. Not appropriate for unsupported outdoor applications — UV exposure causes yellowing and embrittlement over time without protective coatings or cabinet enclosure.
HDU (High-Density Urethane)
A carved foam-like substrate that simulates wood or stone. Exterior-rated, dimensionally stable, and accepts paint cleanly. Common for monument sign face panels, carved identification signs, and dimensional sign elements. Provides a premium carved-wood aesthetic without the maintenance demands of real wood.
Coroplast (Fluted Polypropylene)
Lightweight, low-cost substrate for yard signs, temporary site signs, and short-term outdoor applications. Not rated for long-term exterior exposure — UV and temperature cycling degrade the material over 1–3 years. The go-to substrate for real estate signs, construction site identification, and election signs.
Cast Vinyl
Commercial-grade vinyl film applied to rigid sign substrates. Available in thousands of colours. Cast vinyl (as opposed to calendered vinyl) is rated for outdoor use and conforms to compound curves without lifting or shrinking. Required for vehicle wraps. The graphic layer on most painted aluminum sign panels.
