Sign Installation Timelines

How Long Does Sign Installation Take?

From permit application to final bolt — a realistic timeline guide for commercial sign installation in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.

Lundon Calling installs commercial signage across Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. The timelines on this page reflect real permit processing times, fabrication lead times, and installation scheduling as they actually work in this market — not ideal-scenario estimates.

Sign Installation Timelines by Type

The total time from project kickoff to installed sign depends on three phases: design and approval, fabrication, and installation. Permits run in parallel with fabrication in most cases — but only if you start early.

These timelines assume permit approval proceeds normally. Ottawa sign permits typically take 2–4 weeks for standard signs. More complex applications — illuminated signs, high-rise mounting, or signs in designated heritage areas — can take longer.

What Causes Sign Projects to Run Late

Six common reasons sign projects miss their deadline — and how to avoid them.

Starting the permit too late

The permit application cannot be submitted until drawings are finalized. Starting design late compresses everything downstream.

Landlord approval delays

In leased properties, landlord sign approval must come before the municipal permit is filed. This adds 1–3 weeks in most cases.

Structural engineer requirements

Pylon signs and some large building-mounted signs require a structural engineer's stamp on the permit drawings. Add 1–2 weeks for this.

Custom fabrication lead times

Non-standard sign shapes, custom colours, or specialty materials extend fabrication timelines. Off-the-shelf components are faster.

Site access and coordination

In occupied buildings or active construction sites, installation windows are constrained. Scheduling delays on site are common.

Weather

Exterior installations requiring boom lifts or cranes can be delayed by wind, ice, or extreme temperatures in Ottawa winters.

How to Protect Your Timeline

1

Start signage planning 10–12 weeks before your opening date for any illuminated exterior sign.

2

Start the landlord approval process before finalizing your lease if possible — some landlords take 2–4 weeks to respond.

3

Confirm permit requirements with your sign company before ordering fabrication — requirements vary by municipality across Eastern Ontario.

4

Build a buffer of at least 2 weeks between your target install date and your opening date for anything requiring a permit.
