Sign Pricing Guide — Ottawa & Eastern Ontario

How Much Does a Pylon Sign Cost in Canada?

What drives pylon sign pricing, realistic cost ranges for Ottawa properties, and what's included in a complete installed pylon sign price.

Pylon sign pricing in Canada varies widely depending on size, illumination, foundation requirements, and local permit costs. A small single-tenant pylon and a large multi-tenant highway pylon are both "pylon signs" — but their costs differ by a factor of ten or more. The ranges below are based on installed pylon sign projects completed by Lundon Calling in the Ottawa region.

These figures are directional — the only way to get an accurate price for your specific sign is a site assessment and quote from a sign company that designs and installs pylons in your market. Prices in Ottawa differ from Toronto or Calgary due to local permit fees, labour rates, and material supply chains.

What Drives Pylon Sign Cost

Six cost components that determine the total installed price of a pylon sign in Ottawa.

Sign Size & Panel Area

The single largest driver of pylon sign cost is overall size — specifically the cabinet panel area (width × height of the sign face). A small single-tenant pylon with a 4' × 6' cabinet differs enormously in cost from a large multi-tenant pylon with a 6' × 12' primary cabinet and multiple tenant panels below. As a rough guide: every additional square foot of illuminated sign face adds material, LED lighting, and structural cost. Taller poles require larger-diameter steel and more substantial foundations — height multiplies material and engineering costs.

Single-Tenant vs. Multi-Tenant

A single-tenant pylon — one business, one sign face — is the simplest configuration. A multi-tenant pylon with a primary cabinet and 4–8 tenant reader panels below is substantially more complex to fabricate, requires more structural capacity, and typically includes a changeable tenant panel system (either push-through plastic or EMC). Multi-tenant pylons also require coordination with the property manager and sometimes individual tenant permit applications.

Illumination Type

Non-illuminated pylons (painted or applied graphics) are the lowest cost option — suitable for low-traffic locations or budget-constrained applications. Internally illuminated LED cabinets are the standard for most commercial properties — translucent faces with LED arrays inside. EMC (electronic message centre) integration adds significant cost — a full-colour LED EMC panel integrated into or replacing the primary cabinet face can add $8,000–$25,000+ to the project depending on pixel pitch and panel dimensions.

Permit & Engineering

City of Ottawa sign permits for pylon signs require a structural engineering drawing stamped by a licensed engineer when the sign exceeds a specified size threshold. Engineering fees typically range from $800 to $2,500 depending on the sign height and complexity. The City of Ottawa sign permit fee is calculated based on sign area — expect $300–$1,200 for most commercial pylon sign permits. Lundon Calling manages the full permit application including coordination with the engineer.

Foundation & Electrical

Pylon signs require a concrete foundation sized to the pole diameter and local soil conditions. Foundation excavation and concrete work typically adds $1,500–$4,000 to the project cost. Electrical supply to the sign — trenching from the building, conduit, and connections — adds $500–$2,000 depending on the distance from the building and whether an existing electrical circuit can be extended. Ottawa winter installation can add cost for heated equipment, ground thawing, or scheduling delays.

Total Cost Ranges

Small single-tenant pylon sign (under 12' tall, non-illuminated or basic LED): $5,000–$12,000 installed. Standard single-tenant illuminated pylon (12–20' tall, LED cabinet): $12,000–$25,000 installed. Multi-tenant pylon with reader panels (15–25' tall, full LED illumination): $20,000–$45,000 installed. Large highway-visibility pylon with EMC integration: $35,000–$80,000+. These ranges include fabrication, permit, foundation, and installation. They exclude property-specific costs such as long electrical trench runs, utility conflicts, or specialized access equipment.
